MEANING:  In Native American Shamanism, Dragonfly medicine is of the dream time and the illusionary facade we accept as physical reality.  Dragonfly’s shifting of color, energy, form and movement explodes into the mind of the observer, bringing hints of memory of a time when magic reigned.

Some legends say that Dragonfly was once Dragon.  Dragon was full of wisdom and flew through the night bringing light with its fiery breath that brought forth magic and the illusion of changing form.  Then Coyote was able to trick Dragon into changing form to Dragonfly and Dragon got caught in its own facade and lost his power.

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change, and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.  It brings messages of wisdom and enlightenment and communications from the elemental world.  Dragonfly medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which you need to change.  If you feel the need for change, call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.

Dragonflies, or damselflies, were connected to Freya the Norse goddess of love, fertility and warfare. Freya was famous for her beauty and her knowledge as a magician. It was she who taught Odin the shamanic practices known as seidr.

THE CARVING: Our carvings are single pieces of western red cedar, designed and carved to be wall hangings.  Each carving begins as a 1 X 12-inch cedar board.  While we use power tools (Scroll Saw, Rotary shaft Tool, handheld detail sanders, etc.), we use no lasers, CNC machines or computer-operated cutting machines.  All work is done with our hands and eyes…

We cut the 2-dimensional blanks with scroll and jig saws (double-sized custom orders have to be cut with a jigsaw). Carving is done with rotary shaft tools and disc grinders. The 80-grit sanding is the final phase of the carving process, removing the nicks and gouges from the carving tools, and finishes the shaping of the weave. The next 2 sandings with 120 and then 220 grit finishes the smoothing and polishing. They are finished with Clear Danish Oil to seal the piece, bringing out the grain and the color.
