MEANING: Any words are insufficient. Just listen to the music in your heart…

From Coop: I did the first carving of this on a very sad day in August 1995, to stop the pain. A young friend was helping sand my stuff. He’d just returned from following the Dead for a year. He said “Man, that’s awesome. You need to make more.” So I stayed up ‘til 3 a.m. and finished 3 more. The next morning I was drawing up another, when my wife of that time, (not a deadhead) came into the shop and said, “Honey, I know why you did what you did yesterday, but we’re in a good show [Bristol Renfaire] and pussycats sell. So get back to work.” Saturday morning, all 3 had sold by 11 a.m., I put the 1st one (mine) on display with a custom order sign. Sunday night there were orders for 29 more. I spent long hours the next week making “Jerry’s” to cover my orders. Saturday they all sold by 4p.m. Sunday night, I had orders for 33 more. So here I was with the most lucrative creation of my life, but it was celebrating the death of Jerry. I vowed to open each weekend show with one “Steal Your Face” memorial, and have done so for the past 14 years. I offer this now to true fans of Jerry. A great gift for the Deadhead in your life.

SIZE: 14.5 inches tall x 9 inches wide

THE CARVING: Our carvings are single pieces of western red cedar, designed and carved to be wall hangings.  Each carving begins as a 1 X 12-inch cedar board.  While we use power tools (Scroll Saw, Rotary shaft Tool, handheld detail sanders, etc.), we use no lasers, CNC machines or computer-operated cutting machines.  All work is done with our hands and eyes…

We cut the 2-dimensional blanks with scroll and jig saws (double-sized custom orders have to be cut with a jigsaw). Carving is done with rotary shaft tools and disc grinders. The 80-grit sanding is the final phase of the carving process, removing the nicks and gouges from the carving tools, and finishes the shaping of the weave. The next 2 sandings with 120 and then 220 grit finishes the smoothing and polishing. They are finished with Clear Danish Oil to seal the piece, bringing out the grain and the color.

    Simply Magical piece of art

Posted by Ben Chunias on Feb 8th 2021

This review is long overdue as I purchased my carving many months ago but it has given me time to fall in love with this piece of wood. When I pulled it out of the box the first thing that struck me was the aroma of the carving as if it had just been stained moments before. The attention to detail was the next thing I noticed, you can sense the love which went into making this piece. It was exactly what I hoped for and more, every time I walk into my bedroom and see it sitting on my window sill I cannot help but smile, smile, smile. I would recommend to any Grateful Dead enthusiast looking for a beautiful piece to remind them of the spirit of Jerry and the renewing energy which it can bring to your everyday life. Thank you Coop & Katrina for this lovely piece!
