MEANING: The Celtic Grandmother’s knot is composed of the Goddess Knot; supporting, standing behind, embracing and encompassing the Mother and Child Knot…Just as any Grandmother would wish to do. Honor the generations of motherhood (Grandmahood!) with this wall hanging!
The Mother and Child carving was one of the first Katrina found to add to Coop’s inventory, (see the story on our Mother and Child listing). While the People have been asking for a Grandmother’s Knot for years and I (Katrina) has been fiddling with the design on and off but never got it like I wanted. Once again, during the 2018 season, someone asked for a Grandmother’s Knot…which got me playing with the design again…with a little more intent…my daughter had let me know she was pregnant with her first child! I finally figured out something I liked, it really flowed this time…then got distracted...sigh. Found the design paper when packing to travel and got it carved for the first time during the Maryland Renaissance Festival…and only another 8 months to get online…Ta da!
SIZE: 12 Inches tall by 9 inches at widest part.
THE CARVING: Our carvings are single pieces of western red cedar, designed and carved to be wall hangings. Each carving begins as a 1 X 12 inch cedar board. While we use power tools (Scroll Saw, Rotary shaft Tool, handheld detail sanders etc.), we use no laser’s, CNC machines or computer operated cutting machines. All work is done with our hands and eyes…
We cut the 2 dimensional blanks with scroll and jig saws (double-sized custom orders have to be cut with jigsaw). Carving is done with rotary shaft tools and disc grinders. The 80 grit sanding is the final phase of the carving process, removing the nicks and gouges from the carving tools, and finishes the shaping of the weave. The next 2 sandings with 120 then 220 grit finishes the smoothing and polishing. They are finished with Clear Danish Oil to seal the piece, bringing out the grain and the color

Celtic Grandmothers knot
The pictures cannot do this work of art justice. It is beautiful and elegant. Gave it to my mother-in-law for her birthday and she loved it.
